Fritz Börjesson (1908-2003) - An Öland bridge builder

Already at a young age, Fritz Börjesson formulated ideas about a fixed land connection between Öland and the Kalmar coast. He also took these thoughts with him as a politician, even in Sweden's Riksdag, where Fritz Börjesson sat from 1955 to 1979 for the Center Party. His slow work for an Öland bridge began to bear fruit in the early 1960s, and at both local, regional and national level it was agreed that this was an excellent and fully feasible proposal. In January 1968, the first sod was taken for the bridge construction on the Öland side by Fritz Börjesson. On September 30, 1972, he inaugurated the Öland Bridge in Öland's Mölltorp, while the then Crown Prince Carl Gustaf performed the official inauguration on the Kalmar side. Fritz Börjesson retained his interest in bridges throughout his life.
