St. Gertruds - Stories from a poor cemetery
In 2017, the latest in a series of different archaeological excavations was carried out on the Esplanade in Kalmar, where St Gertrud's cemetery once stood. No trace was found of the church that stood here, but the old graves were - and in some cases still are - just under the asphalt. The last burial took place in 1875 and only twelve years later, in 1887, planning began for the Esplanade, which was to be drawn across the cemetery. It evokes emotions today and should reasonably have done so even then. Hear Cecilia Ring, archaeologist at the Kalmar county museum, tell us about the work and what the old graves give us about the Kalmar residents of the time. Participant: Cecilia Ring, Archaeologist Ph.D. Program manager, Pia-Lena Björnlund. Producer, Andreas Juhl
