15 million in capital contribution to the Kalmar county museum foundation
Kalmar County Museum's financial founders Region Kalmar County and Kalmar Municipality have decided on an unconditional capital contribution to the Kalmar County Museum Foundation of SEK 7.5 million each, a total of SEK 15 million. The money will be used to move the last of the museum's object collections to the collection warehouse in the Bilen quarter at the former Volvo factory and to strengthen equity. The relocation of the objects makes available an entire floor plan of approximately 1,000 square meters.
In November, Kalmar County Museum submitted a request for capital additions to the foundation Kalmar County Museum's financial founders. The background was that the museum collections in Ångkvarnen have not been reviewed in modern times and there is a great need for cleaning, conservation and organization as well as to strengthen the museum's capital. The inquiry covered two areas:
- 12 million to carry out a move of the museum's collections from Ångkvarnen
- 3 million to earmarked funds within equity
Capital injection enables relocation and development of the object collections as well as new public spaces
For about 10 years, an extensive project to empty external warehouses and move the museum's collections to modern premises has been underway. The next major stage is to move and organize the collections in the Ångkvarnen, which is on floor 5 and which includes large collections of objects. The capital injection now makes it possible to carry out collection management according to modern museum standards and free up areas in the Ångkvarnen for expanded public activities. The collections from the Ångkvarnen must move to the same warehouse where the other collections are located. The collections must be made available in both exhibitions and in various digital channels as well as for research in accordance with the Museums Act. The project is estimated to last for approximately 5 years starting in 2023. Kalmar County Museum's object collections comprise approximately 1 million objects.
- The move not only provides better protection of the objects for future generations, but also gives the museum the opportunity to develop stronger in the long term. By making a completely new floor available, visitors will also be able to have new exciting experiences. In the future, the museum wants the liberated areas to contain a new cultural-historical exhibition about Kalmar county, says Jonas Hellberg, chairman of the foundation's board.
A large part of Kalmar County Museum's own capital consists of earmarked funds, the largest part of which belongs to the Kronan project and the investigations. Through new accounting rules, the use of earmarked funds will result in a deficit and negatively affect the result in the coming years. As a result, there is a need to strengthen the foundation's own capital by SEK 3 million.
- Capital additions make it possible to meet the great challenges we have to care for, manage and make the collections available for future generations. It is one of the museum's most important and fundamental missions. It also gives us financial stability and so we can focus on continuing to develop our business, says Örjan Molander, museum director at Kalmar County Museum.
The decision from the founders also contains a directive to the board and management of Stiftelsen Kalmar läns museum to strengthen the equity by an additional SEK 3 million over a period of four years through positive results.

Through the museum's digital museum, exhibitions, lectures and together with researchers and schools, we work to make our collections and our knowledge of Kalmar County's common cultural heritage as accessible as possible both to present and future generations.
The collections at the Kalmar county museum consist of objects from the county's various environments and activities at different times. But there is also an extensive collection of photographs, archival documents, personal archives and much more. In the collections there are approximately one million objects that provide the opportunity for stories, facts, knowledge and experiences about people's lives, conditions, societies, experiences from different perspectives. The objects range from the older Stone Age to modern times. Through exhibitions, lectures and other activities, the museum highlights objects, both in the museum and digitally. Some of the museum's collections can be viewed digitally through our databases and we are constantly working to publish more.
