A living cultural heritage - Cemeteries in the Diocese of Växjö

In 2005, at the county museum in Kalmar, we began the work of inventorying the cemeteries located in Kalmar county's part of Växjö diocese. The work has for each cemetery involved a compilation of the cemetery's history, the appearance of the cemetery today has been documented and cultural-historical values have been made. The purpose of the project has been to compile the knowledge that exists about each cemetery and to find out what cultural-historical values are found in the cemeteries. What traces of ancient grave care traditions have been preserved and what do we need to protect in the future? For each cemetery there is a report. You can find the reports on this link under the heading churches and then the respective municipality. The inventory work was completed in the entire Växjö diocese in 2008. The results have now been compiled in a book. The purpose of the book is to collect the experiences and knowledge that emerged through the project. With the book, we want to show the rich history that is gathered in our cemeteries. They reflect local traditions and conditions, but also how society has looked and changed over time. The book is richly illustrated with photographs from the inventory work. Magdalena Jonsson, antiquarian
